Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee's 'Despacito' Becomes The Most-Streamed Song Ever

Not only is Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's "Despacito" on track to take the 2017 Song of the Summer title, but the global smash is now the most-streamed song in history, as per a new announcement by Universal Music.

On Wednesday (July 19), Universal Music announced that the song, which was released in January, has a combined total of 4.6 billion plays for the original mix and Justin Bieber's Spanglish remix. Most of "Despacito"'s plays come from the track's official music video (sans Bieber) on YouTube, which has racked up 2.6 billion views. It's currently the third-most watched music video in YouTube history.

Universal Music Group chairman and CEO Lucian Grainge spoke out on how this particular method of music consumption has impacted a song like "Despacito, admitting that streaming "has opened up the possibility of a song with a different beat, from a different culture and in a different language to become a juggernaut of success around the world."
