Last night, Saturday Night Live returned for the first time since the coronavirus outbreak began for a special "At Home" episode. Though unconventional, the show tried to stay as true to its original format as possible, including a featured music guest. Coldplay's Chris Martin covered Bob Dylan's "Shelter From The Storm" from his house — hanging "Entrance To Trains" posters above his piano to pay homage to SNL's Grand Central-themed stage. The song choice was fitting, considering the Shelter In Place order the whole country is under during these trying times.
Tom Hanks hosted the show from his house, delivering the opening monologue from his kitchen. Aside from using a Tiger King joke, the actor also addressed his own COVID-19 diagnosis.
“But why me as host?" he said. "For one, I have been the celebrity canary in the coal mine for the coronavirus, and ever since being diagnosed, I have been more like ‘America’s Dad’ than ever before, since no one wants to be around me any more, and I make people uncomfortable," he quipped before ending his monologue with some hopeful words.
"Hey, stay safe, we are in this for the duration, and we will get through this together,” he said. “We are going to thank our hospital workers, our First Responders and all the helpers, the supermarket stockers, the people who deliver our food, the people who are making takeout for us, the men and women who are keeping this country going at a time when we need them more than ever before.”
