COVID-19 Spike Expected If South Florida Is Under Evacuation Order

If South Florida residents are forced to flee from a hurricane this season expect a spike in COVID-19 cases. A study by the Union of Concerned Scientists looked at how the spread of coronavirus would be affected by millions of people being evacuated out of Monroe, Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. Scientist Kristy Dahl says they know there would be a major increase in cases, but it could be slowed if they send evacuees to counties that do not have a high number of cases. One simulation using the evacuation route ordered during Hurricane Irma showed it would result in 61-thousand new COVID-19 cases.
