Mathew Knowles, Father of Beyoncé, Talks About His Breast Cancer Diagnosis

It's October! That means #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth, and that's a diagnosis that we don't really hear about happening in men too often. Statistically, 99% of cases are in women... but as rare as it is, one of the most famous Hollywood dads is opening up about his own experience with breast cancer, and how he overcame it.

Beyonce and Solange's father, Mathew Knowles, sat down with Michael Strahan of Good Morning America to talk about how he wound up going to get screened, what he did once he found out he had breast cancer, and how men can prevent bad news with the disease:

According to the American Cancer Society's official site:

The American Cancer Society estimates for breast cancer in men in the United States for 2019 are:

  • About 2,670 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed
  • About 500 men will die from breast cancer

Breast cancer is about 100 times less common among white men than among white women. It is about 70 times less common among black men than black women . Like black women, black men with breast cancer tend to have a worse prognosis (outlook). For men, the lifetime risk of getting breast cancer is about 1 in 833.
