The Musical Mastery That Is Willow

Willow Smith is musically eclipsing her family.

In a home that was literally filled with music, with a Grammy Award winning hip-hop legend of a father, a metal band singer of a mother, and a pair of brothers that have each forged their own way and names into the music world, Willow definitely grew up surrounded by possibilities when it came to choosing her own sound. At a young age she went with what was popular at the time, but now she's the one whose musical ear has matured the most, which has turned her into the absolute artist of the family.

Her last album "Coping Mechanism" was the culmination of her rise in her exploration of rock, combining all sub-genre's to create a melting pot of the sound, but if her latest singles are any indication, her next album “Empathogen," will be an even further evolution of both her musical and lyrical prowess. Willow has done more than find her own musical niche in the Smith family, she has artistically set herself apart from all of her contemporaries in her generational field. Making music that doesn't necessarily fit into any one genre specifically, Willow has effectively turned herself into a progressive pop star.

That's not an over complication of what she has done either, Willow's sound and style is compositionally intricate, while lyrically catchy yet in depth and emotive. In other words her sound is technical, her lyrics are deep and impactful, but not so much that it can't be followed by the average ear. She's basically made herself into a modern day Steely Dan and theirs is a sound that's as progressive as it gets.

Willow Smith's musical maturity is the stuff that makes legends timeless. It's purity will allow it to survive the ravages of dwindling attention spans that will accumulate through time, as the faith of an individualized ear will always gravitate to it to keep it alive.

Keep using that masterful brush to paint that picture Willow. You are a great artist of your time.
