WATCH: Memorial On 25th Anniversary Of ValuJet Crash

Family members and first responders are gathering this afternoon at the ValuJet Flight 592 memorial with its 110 pillars memorializing the lives lost deep in the West Miami-Dade Everglades on May 11th, 1996.

The service includes 110 seconds of silence, ending at 2:13:42, the exact time the plane dropped off the radar.

Federal investigators determined improperly stored oxygen canisters catching fire in the cargo hold caused the crash.

Smoke detectors and fire suppression systems are now mandatory in cargo holds. ValuJet's maintenance contractor SabreTech and three of its employees were charged for their roles in the crash. One, Mauro Valenzuela-Reyes, remains on the run.
