Delray Beach families with guns in their homes can take advantage of a program hosted by the police department.

There's a box in the lobby of the police headquarters labeled "Complimentary Gun Locks."

Police Chief Javaro Sims says it's part of the agency's ongoing gun safety initiative, and also urges parents to keep their weapons out of the site of their children.

"We have a responsibility as parents and adults to teach our kids but also keep our kids safe, away from guns."

In addition to the fear that legally owned guns could wind up in the hands of people who may break into your home, Chief Sims says eighty percent of underage shooters on school campuses got the guns they used from their home or a friend or relative's.

"Kids are curious and guess what...if you leave a gun for them, they're going to eventually pick that gun up. And hopefully it's not loaded because you can imagine what's going to happen if that's the case."

The Delray Beach Police Dept. lobby is open from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday at 300 W. Atlantic Avenue.
