New Orleans' Mardi Gras parades and celebration in 2021 will be prohibited due to Coronavirus.
Mayor LaToya Cantrell's office made the announcement on Tuesday in the hopes of limiting the spread of COVID.
"With COVID-19 cases increasing around the country, we will have to modify how to observe [Carnival] season. ... We are surrounded by hot spots and we don't know what the future holds in store for us."
City officials have turned to the public for alternate ideas to celebrate the holiday safely.
People can submit a detailed plan for socially distanced celebrations with safety protocols built in as well as ideas for a "good theme" or "name" for the Carnival.
New Orleans' public safety and public health team will review the ideas, which are due by Dec. 5.
