World Mental Health Day: Sesame Street Confronts Addiction Crisis

With aim to educate and spread awareness for October 10th, World Mental Health Day, as part of the Sesame Street in Communities series, Karli, the yellow-haired muppet reveals her mother is battling addiction.

The Sesame Street in Communities project focuses on telling the stories of children struggling with the effects of their parents’ addiction. In the episode “Lending A Hand”, Karli tackles a sensitive subject as she explains to Elmo she is in foster care because her mom is battling addiction.

Speaking to muppet peer, Karli explains her mom too participates in “talk circles”, which is a regular activity used to discuss various topics on the series. Although, in her mother’s circles they “talk about grown up problems”. Karli also further explained her mom goes to these “grownup circles” to learn how to take better care of herself. The children's show has previously addressed additional tough topics such as homelessness and children with incarcerated parents.

World Mental Health Day (October 10) is a day to recognize global mental health education, awareness and support against social stigmas regarding the subject.
