California: First State To Stop Handing Out Plastic Straws At Restaurants

The plastic straw debate has been a big thing in California this past year. News about getting rid of straws, replacing them with newly designed lids, biodegradable straws and more all have been different ideas on how to replace the plastic straws that are polluting the Earth little by little.

Coming soon, people who want straws with their drinks will have to ask if you're in a California restaurant. The new law which was just signed by Governor Jerry Brown, makes California the first state to get rid of restaurants giving out single-use plastic straws automatically with orders.

I feel like I have already noticed this, have you? When I go to a restaurant, I notice I have to ask now, the straws aren't automatically placed on my table like they used to be!

This new law will take effect next year and the new law doesn't ban plastic straws completely like some cities have. Restaurants also are given two warnings and then a $300 fine if they don't comply with the new law.

I'm totally down for saving the environment and lessening the use of plastic straws when available but I really don't like those paper straws. Within a minute of using them, they get soggy and break. Overall, it's not that big of a deal because I rather help the planet but hopefully we can figure out a good alternative to paper straws too!
