Swimmer's BOTH Legs Bitten By Shark at Beach in Miami!

Man! Be careful out there people!

An unidentified man was swimming Sunday afternoon off Haulover Beach when he was attacked on BOTH legs by a bull shark approximately 4 to 5 feet.

Lifeguards had just become aware of the shark and were in the process of evacuating the beach.

He was taken to Aventura Hospital where he had to receive surgery & has since been released.

We hope he gets better soon!

"In my 20 years as a lifeguard, this is the first time a person has been bitten here at Haulover Beach, and possibly the first for Miami-Dade County," said MDFR Ocean Rescue Lt. Matt Sparling.

The International Shark Attack File advises swimmers to leave the water if sharks are spotted and to avoid harassing them. The organization also offers this advice:

  • Always stay in groups
  • Avoid swimming during darkness or twilight hours
  • Do not enter the water if bleeding from an open wound, and enter with caution if menstruating.
  • Don’t wear shiny jewelry
  • Avoid water near people fishing, diving seabirds or sewage discharge sites.
  • Use caution when water is murky
  • Refrain from excess splashing and do not allow pets in the water because of their erratic movements.
  • Exercise caution when occupying the area between sandbars or near steep dropoffs --- these are favorite hangouts for sharks.
