Uh, yeah...like many of you, I was very confused when I heard the mayor of the City of Fort Lauderdale reopened gyms after the mayor of Broward County said gyms would remain closed in phase one of reopening.
Now, two days after gyms and fitness centers reopened in the City of Fort Lauderdale, Mayor Dean Trantalis, is advising them to close down. He said that the county would be dishing out fines and other sanctions. Apparently, a legal standoff is taking place between county and city officials.
Trantalis sent out a letter to residents yesterday that said, "We continue to work hard to persuade the county to change its stance. It makes no sense to keep gyms closed. Our efforts to fight COVID-19 have worked well. We met all public health measurements to move into Phase 1 of reopening."
I sympathize for business owners and gym-goers who were excited to get back in the facilities, but I do understand the importance of public safety.
At this time, there's no word on when Broward or Miami-Dade Counties will reopen gyms.
