Miami-Dade commissioners have agreed to fund a monorail that will connect downtown Miami to Miami Beach. The $14-million interim agreement will fund a year and a half of engineering and design planning work. After the 18-months is up, a final plan and budget will have to go up before the commission again.
The Miami Beach Monorail is expected to be complete by 2026. It will extend approximately 3.45 miles on the south side of the MacArthur Causeway. Two trains will constantly be running holding up to about 300 people each. The trains will run about 50 mph offering 12 rides per hour. The consortium is still working with the county to decide on a fare that would be the best value for riders.
