A Florida woman who was about to give birth refused to go to the hospital until after she voted. She asked her husband to stop at the Supervisor of Election’s office, on the way to the hospital so she could get her vote in. It wasn't so simple though.
So since she was about to give birth she couldn't really get out of the car to go inside and vote. So her husband presented a clerk at the elections office, Karen Briceño González, with both of their IDs. Karen wanted to give her a mail-in ballot, but the husband explained his wife was waiting in the car and would not go to the hospital to give birth until she voted. The woman wanted to vote right there and then!
“It was an odd situation but she wanted to vote and that was her right as an American citizen," Karen recalled.
Eventually Karen walked out of the building to hand the woman her ballot, where she successfully voted from the car. Karen says the woman was actually very calm and the husband was more nervous than she was! The woman handed in her ballot, got her "I Voted" sticker and was off to the hospital.
The staff at the elections office plans to get the baby a onesie with the words “First Vote” on it and “Future Voter” stickers.
