County and local officials gathered yesterday at the Surfside memorial wall to discuss how to best preserve it. The blocks-long tribute to the victims includes photos, flowers and memories that officials are hoping to preserve as is. It's become a place for people to pay their respects and remember the 98 lives lost.
Mayor Daniella Levine Cava released a statement yesterday saying: “Today (Thursday) we had a preliminary meeting to discuss how we can best work to preserve the extraordinary collection of memories and outpouring of love at the Surfside memorial wall for the long term. Our next step is to meet with the families and survivors, faith leaders, and the Surfside community to make sure all voices are heard as we determine the best path forward.”
Families of the victims will be consulted, but officials note there’s a race against time as a major storm can knock it all away.
