In closing out the decade, TIME Magazine has named their latest "Person of the Year" and 2019 is one for the books as she's the youngest to receive the accolade since the inception of the distinction back in 1927.
Greta Thunberg of Sweden, who's best known for her efforts in clime change activism, is 16-years-old and was a finalist for the honor alongside Donald Trump, Nancy Pelosi, the anonymous CIA whistleblower, and the Hong Kong protestors. She received a nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize back in March of this year and has since continued being the face of student-led strikes around the world protesting for changes to improve our climate, an effort she embarked on 2 years ago.
TIME Magazine Editor-In-Chief Edward Felsenthal had this to say about the young philanthropist:
"She embodies youth activism. Her rise in influence has been really extraordinary. She was a solo protester with a hand-painted sign 14 months ago. She's now led millions of people around the world, 150 countries, to act on behalf of the planet, and she's really been a key driver this year taking this issue from backstage to center."
