Legendary actor Donald Sutherland, known for roles in The Dirty Dozen, M*A*S*H*, Animal House and The Hunger Games, has died at the age of 88, his son, actor Kiefer Sutherland, confirmed in an Instagram post.
"With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away. I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived," Kiefer wrote.
Donald Sutherland's acting career spanned more than a half century, initially gaining notoriety for roles in the low-budget horror films Castle of the Living Dead (1963) and Die! Die! My Darling in 1967 before landing the role of Vernon L. Pinkley, one of the bottom six in The Dirty Dozen.
Sutherland later starred as Capt. 'Hawkeye' Pierce in the 1970 film version of M*A*S*H*, which turned him into a major star. The Emmy and Golden Globe winning actor later starred as President Snow in The Hunger Games film franchise from 2012 to 2015, as well as numerous other television and film roles as recently as 2023.
