Mariah Carey revealed the heartbreaking tragedy she experienced over the weekend after losing two members of her family on the same day.

The 55-year-old musician confirmed to People on Monday (August 26) that her mother, Patricia, died over the weekend. While coming to terms with the loss of her mom, she also had to face another "tragic" death when her sister, Alison, also passed away on the same day. No other details regarding their causes of death have been shared at this time.

"My heart is broken that I've lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day," Carey said in a statement, also asking for privacy to handle this "impossible" time in her life.

The "Fantasy" singer previously opened up about her complicated relationship with her mother, writing in her 2020 memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey — which was even dedicated in part to Patricia — that "like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities. It's never been only black-and-white — it's been a whole rainbow of emotions."

Despite their storied past, Carey reflected in her statement to People how "blessed" she was to spend quality time with her mom over the past week before she passed.

"I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed," she said in her statement to People. "I appreciate everyone's love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time."
