Sea turtle nesting season is back on Florida's east coast. Keep in mind that if you live near the beach artificial lighting can cause turtles to get disoriented.
Sarah Hirsch with Loggerhead Marinelife Center says "We do ask that people keep the beaches dark for sea turtles. That means turning off all your lights that are on the coast." Also for residents, it's recommended that all interior lights be shielded from the beach. You can use curtains, shades or tinting.
The reason light is so important it's because the baby turtles use natural light from the moon and stars to find the water. If the artificial lighting is not shielded, it can cause the turtles to head in the wrong direction.
Nesting season is underway through October.
